The Relativity of Disgust continued…
A commentary on “revolting” practices through the ages from a dog’s perspective.
Odors
Another habit humans are not fond of in their furry friends is our penchant for rolling in foul smelling things like poop, pee, and even dead bodies. Yep we do it! We get down and dirty, paying special attention to our cheeks and necks. So the story is that we are rubbing these areas because they are where we have scent glands and we are masking our own scents with other odors like we used to do back in the day when we needed to be incognito for survival reasons. Some habits die hard…what can I say? There was a long period of time humans bathed 2 times a year, whether needed or not! The first family member to climb into the warm fresh water would be the man of the house, followed by lesser men of the home, followed by the women of the home followed by the kids of the home followed by the infants. At this point, the water was so horrifying the phrase “throwing the baby out with the bath water” makes so much more sense. The water was so dirty you might actually do that if you weren’t careful! My guess is that you are making a disgusted face now. If you were to share the face with other people they would mirror the face back to you. Disgusted faces are like yawning…they cross the borders of species and are contagious…as is the bath water!
